Know the Warning Signs

Do You Have Bats in the Attic?

Bats are quiet and nocturnal, so a roost can go unnoticed for months. These are the signs Colorado Springs homeowners should watch for.

πŸŒ†

Bats at Dusk

If you see bats emerging from the same spot on your roofline, soffit, or eave at sunset, you almost certainly have a roost. Count them over a few evenings β€” the number tells us the colony size.

πŸ’©

Guano Accumulation

Bat droppings (guano) collect below entry points β€” on siding, in the attic, on the ground, or in insulation. It looks like dark grains and crumbles to powder. Accumulated guano is a health hazard.

πŸ‘ƒ

Ammonia Odor

A strong, musty, ammonia-like smell coming from the attic or upper walls is a classic sign of an established bat colony and a buildup of urine and guano.

πŸ”Š

Scratching or Squeaking

Faint scratching, fluttering, or high-pitched squeaking from the attic or walls β€” especially around dusk and dawn β€” often indicates roosting bats rather than rodents.

🟀

Stains at Entry Points

Brown, greasy staining around gaps at the roofline, ridge vent, or chimney flashing is left by bats squeezing in and out of the same opening repeatedly.

πŸ¦‡

A Bat Indoors

A single bat that finds its way into a living space is often a sign of a larger roost in the structure. Never handle it bare-handed β€” call us, and avoid contact in case of rabies exposure.

Our Bat Services

From Inspection to a Sealed Roofline

Every step is legal, humane, and timed to protect the colony β€” and your home.

πŸ”¦

Roost Inspection

We inspect the attic, soffits, eaves, and roofline to confirm the species, locate every entry point, and estimate the colony size before recommending an approach.

πŸšͺ

One-Way Exclusion Devices

We install legal one-way exclusion devices on the primary exits. Bats crawl out to feed but cannot get back in β€” no bat is trapped or harmed.

πŸ“…

Maternity-Season Compliance

We never exclude when flightless pups are present. We schedule the work for the legal window so no young bats are sealed inside to die.

🧼

Guano Cleanup & Decontamination

We remove accumulated guano with proper protective equipment and decontaminate the space to address the histoplasmosis and odor risk.

πŸ”’

Permanent Entry-Point Sealing

Once the colony has left, we seal every opening β€” ridge vents, gaps at the roofline, chimney flashing β€” with durable, bat-proof materials.

πŸ›‘οΈ

Roost-Proofing Warranty

We back the sealed roofline with a written warranty. If a sealed point fails and bats return through it, we come back and fix it at no charge.

The Right Way

Why Bat Exclusion Has to Be Done by the Book

Bats are protected, and the timing rules exist for a reason. Seal a roost during maternity season and you trap flightless pups inside β€” they die in your walls, the mother bats panic and find new ways into your living space, and you\'re left with a decomposition and odor problem on top of a legal violation.

At Wildguard, we exclude bats only with legal one-way devices, only outside maternity season, and only after confirming the full colony can exit. Then we clean the guano, decontaminate, and seal β€” permanently. It\'s the humane way and the legal way, and it\'s the only way that actually keeps them out for good.

Eric Calderon, Lead Wildlife Operator:

"Half the bat calls we get are cleaning up after someone sealed a roost in July. Dead pups in the wall, frantic bats in the bedroom. Do it right, in the right window, and the colony just leaves and never comes back."

Questions

Bat Removal FAQ

Is it legal to remove bats from my home?
Bats are a protected species, and the rules are strict. You cannot trap, poison, or kill them β€” and you cannot perform an exclusion during maternity season (roughly June through mid-August) when flightless pups are present, because sealing them in is both illegal and inhumane. Wildguard performs only legal, humane exclusions, timed correctly and done with one-way devices that let bats leave and never return.
How does humane bat exclusion work?
We inspect the roost, find every opening the colony uses, and install one-way exclusion devices on the primary exits. Bats can crawl out to feed at night but cannot get back in. After several nights confirm the colony has left, we seal all openings permanently. No bat is trapped inside, and no bat is harmed.
Why can't I just seal the holes myself?
Two reasons. First, if it's maternity season, sealing traps flightless pups inside, which is illegal and creates a far worse problem β€” dead bats decaying in your walls. Second, bats use multiple entry points; miss one and the colony simply re-routes. Proper exclusion requires identifying every opening and timing the work correctly.
Do bats really carry disease?
Bats can carry rabies, and their accumulated droppings (guano) can harbor a fungus that causes histoplasmosis, a respiratory illness. This is why guano cleanup and decontamination is a core part of any bat job β€” and why it should be done with proper protective equipment, not a shop vac and a dust mask.
What causes bats to roost in Colorado Springs homes?
Bats look for warm, dark, undisturbed cavities β€” exactly what attics, soffits, and roof eaves provide. Older homes with gaps at the roofline, ridge vents, and chimney flashing are especially attractive. Once a colony establishes a roost, they return year after year unless properly excluded.
